Our Partnership with
Uthando is an award-winning non-profit organisation based in Cape Town that connects travellers and corporates with authentic, community-led initiatives.
Since its founding in 2007, Personal Africa has worked closely with Uthando to introduce our international guests to these extraordinary projects and the inspiring individuals behind them.
Over the years, these visits have become some of the most meaningful experiences for our travellers offering a deeper understanding of the communities, creativity, resilience, and innovation found throughout Cape Town’s townships.
More recently, we have expanded our involvement by committing to ongoing monthly contributions to specific projects that are particularly in need of support and that resonate deeply with our team.
Alongside these monthly contributions, we continue to promote and support the wider network of projects that Uthando works with by:
• Introducing visiting guests to the projects
• Driving awareness for initiatives in times of need
• Supporting one-off fundraising initiatives
• Sharing the inspiring stories of the people leading these projects
Very often, our guests are so moved by what they encounter that they go on to support the projects themselves extending the impact far beyond their visit.
Kronendal Music Academy (KMA)
THE STORY
Kronendal Music Academy was established in 2007 as a non-profit organisation with the vision of enabling disadvantaged children to discover and develop their musical talents.
Based in Hout Bay, the academy brings together children from the communities of Imizamo Yethu and the Hangberg fishing village. Today it is the only fully-fledged music school in the valley.
More than 150 pupils participate in music lessons and ensembles under the guidance of 18 teachers who specialise in over 26 instruments. Through regular performances and examinations, the academy provides both artistic development and academic opportunity.
Beyond musical education, KMA’s award-winning programmes promote social integration between communities while helping young people develop confidence, discipline, creativity and essential cognitive skills.

Mdzananda Animal Clinic
THE STORY
Mdzananda Animal Clinic is a permanent non-profit veterinary clinic based in Khayelitsha that provides vital care for the animals of the community.
Founded in 1996, the clinic treats over 1,000 animals every month through consultations, surgeries, hospitalisation, sterilisation programmes and mobile outreach clinics. It also runs an emergency ambulance service, re-homing programmes, and community education initiatives focused on responsible pet care.
In communities where resources are limited, access to affordable veterinary care can make a profound difference to both animals and their owners.
The clinic operates on the belief that a healthy community is one that values and cares for its animals. Through education and compassion, it encourages responsibility, empathy, and respect for life.

Sibongile Day & Night Care Centre
THE STORY
Sibongile Day & Night Care Centre provides specialised care for children with cerebral palsy and other severe disabilities in the community of Khayelitsha.
The centre was founded by Nomasango Xabanisa, whose own daughter Sibongile was born with cerebral palsy. Recognising the lack of support available for children with disabilities in her community, she began caring for children in her own home.
After receiving training at the Red Cross Children’s Hospital in Cape Town, she formally established the organisation to provide professional, compassionate care to children who would otherwise have limited access to specialised support.
Many families in township communities face immense pressure when raising a disabled child, often without adequate resources or social support. Sibongile Day & Night Care Centre fills a critical gap by offering both residential and day care services in a safe, nurturing environment.

Goal50 – Building Futures from Waste
Goal50 is an extraordinary eco-conscious education project currently underway in Heideveld, Cape Town.
The initiative forms part of Great Commission United’s Montessori Early Childhood Development Programme and aims to create a safe, inspiring learning environment for young children while also offering after-school programmes for older learners.
In communities where early childhood development facilities are scarce, access to quality learning environments can significantly influence a child’s future opportunities.
An Innovative Building Approach
Phase one of the project was constructed using recycled materials including:
• 1,700 tyres
• Plastic bottles
• Glass bottles
• Film-set waste bricks and other reclaimed materials
This sustainable construction method not only removes waste from landfills but also produces structures that are highly durable and naturally temperature regulated.
Skills Development and Employment
During the construction process, members of the local Heideveld community were trained and employed to build the facility. Many participants have since gone on to secure full-time employment using the skills they developed through the project.
The Next Phase
Phase one was completed in October 2025. The next stages will expand the facility to support between 300 and 500 children each year through early childhood education and after-school programmes.
To complete the remaining phases, the project aims to raise R8 million.
